<image:caption>Leucistic White-throated Sparrow: Leucism is a trait in birds where they fail to develop pigment in some of their plumage. Similar, but not the same as albinism, these birds still display some of their field marks (like the yellow on the brow in this bird). This bird had been reported on the Toronto birding discord server, but frankly I forgot about it and wasn’t looking for it when I stumbled on it. In a flock of 8 to 10 mostly brown White-throated Sparrows, this bird just jumped out at me. Some road cyclists came by and scared the bird into a bush, where I was able to capture this photo that looks like its natural habitat. Much better than the first photos where it was foraging next to a bunch of overflowing garbage cans.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Long Weekend Pictures - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>American Pipit: On Sunday I took a different path than I normally do at Colonel Sam Smith Park, and true to Robert Frost, taking that path “has made all the difference”. I rounded Whimbrel Point and had a few sparrows flutter out from a bush, and then quickly realized they weren’t sparrows at all. I saw where they landed, and I was able to sneak along the rocky coastline of lake Ontario and carefully climb back up right where they were singing. My friend Matt described them as “Well named. looks like a Pipit”, and I noted that they were brave and didn’t run away… so definitely American.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nashville Warbler: On Saturday I had two life list birds, and this Nashville Warbler was one of them. Not an uncommon bird, but just one I hadn’t seen personally. One of my favorite parts about bird photography is how you really get to appreciate the colors once you get home and get to take a closer look on a bigger screen. The Olive colors in its wings are absolutely beautiful.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Orange-crowned Warbler: My last lifer for the weekend was the Orange-crowned Warbler. Unfortunately I didn’t get a better picture, but at least I got enough bad pictures to properly identify this bird. I probably would have missed it entirely (or at least mis-identified it) had I not been with my friend Barry who told me before we started that this was his target bird for the day. A bit drab, and very quick, I’m glad we were both there to corroborate the sighting and add it to our respective life-lists.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ring-billed Gull: These gulls are so pervasive that there’s probably one flying above you as you read this. However I really liked the way this photo came out. <image:title>Home - Long Weekend Pictures - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Lapland Longspur: There’s a popular discord server in Toronto that alerts people to rare or hard to find birds. I wasn’t able to drop everything and head to Ashbridge’s Bay on Sunday when this bird was found, but I was the first person to find it again on Monday morning at dawn. The Lapland Longspur is an incredibly well-camouflaged bird, and this one was right on the edge of a beach trail frequented by off-leash dogs. Still, it seemed quite content to forage in a little patch of grass even with the occasional passing dog (and hordes of wildlife photographers), perhaps building up its strength to continue with its migration over lake Ontario.</image:caption>

Every photographer makes the same joke when they post a photo of a Kinglet, something like “I’m so glad this little bird sat still for ONE SECOND so I could get a picture”! <image:caption>Henry and I found this sleeping Raccoon while searching for Owls. At first he was nervous because he’s been warned of the dangers of “urban Raccoons” and rabies (our neighbor was bit outside his house in broad daylight). Of course a healthy fear is good, but I reassured him that a Raccoon sleeping in a big park in the middle of the day, is doing exactly what Raccoons should be doing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Because Great Blue Herons are big, and blue, and often standing along shorelines, it makes them very easy to photograph. In fact I probably have more saved pictures of Great Blue Herons than any other species. However, capturing this photo with the fall colors behind the bird finally made for a picture that was interesting enough for me to share it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you follow me on instagram (@ComeBirdingWithMe), you’ve seen this and several other pictures of the same Greater Scaup. I captured several different types of shots (like action shots, images with multiple birds, a stare down, etc.) and then asked people what they liked the best. Most liked the action shot, but my non-birder friends liked the profile shot more. I liked it too, so that’s what I added here. The biggest complaint about the profile shots though was that they can get a little boring…</image:caption>

<image:caption>This Purple Sandpiper was spotted at my favorite waterfront park, and when I arrived and saw the lake I figured the report had to be wrong. There was no way a shorebird was going to be hanging out on the rocks with these big waves crashing into them. Sure enough, there it was, jumping around and finding things to eat as the waves pummelled the shore. It was such a delight watching this bird navigate the shoreline, I sat in the afternoon sun and watched this bird for an hour.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a Snow Goose that lost his flock, and he decided to join a gaggle of Canada Geese. I have to be careful that I’m not just talking about my kids the entire time, but this is another one where I brought my daughter along. It was a bitter cold day and even though I had her bundled up, after about 10 minutes outside I could tell it was just too cold. As soon as I got her back in the car, of course100 geese flew in and landed in the pond. The white Snow Goose stuck out like a… well like a Snow Goose in a flock of Canada Geese. I ran over, took the picture, and then brought my daughter home for hot chocolate.</image:caption>

<image:caption>First is a beautiful Barred Owl. This was just before our baby was born when I took my wife and 20 month old daughter for a gentle walk in the woods. We stumbled across a group of photographers who had spotted this owl, and we pointed it out to her. She said “Owl! Who Who!” and that was enough to catch the owl’s attention. I snapped a few pictures and we moved along, but the Barred Owl never took its eyes off my daughter as we walked away. It was magical for her, and therefore for me as well.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This Harlequin Duck has become a full-time winter resident of Toronto. It was challenging to find him, challenging to get close to him, and challenging to capture a photo that does this bird justice. I probably learned more about bird photography in one single day trying to get this picture right. His dark eye matches the rest of the blue on his head and is practically invisible in about 90% of the pictures I took. Still, despite all the photography frustration, that is one beautiful duck, and I’m glad I had the good fortune to spend 20 minutes admiring him from the shore.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On paternity leave I had to run errands, and sometimes those errands took me near well known birding spots. While the dog was getting groomed I stopped by a pond to see this female Ruddy Duck. I had been trying to spot this species for nearly a year, but I always seemed to miss them. When I finally found this one I realized what the problem was… they’re tiny! In comparison to a Mallard, I would say it’s half the size or maybe less. This particular duck wasn’t as skiddish as the others that been avoiding me, and it let me get a nice closeup shot.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I love this picture of an American Kestrel. I brought my son with me to the nearby airport to go birding that day, and he fell asleep in the car, so I ended up just driving around instead of waking him up. When I saw this handsome bird on a fence, I pulled off the airport road to take some close up pictures. The bird was very patient and didn’t fly away, and my son never woke up. I should have bought a lottery ticket I was so lucky.</image:caption>

<image:caption>And so I’ll end with another boring profile… are you bored yet? This is a Common Goldeneye. I tried so hard to get a good picture of these beautiful birds, and there were days I had the sunrise but no Goldeneye, and other days I had the Goldeneye but no sunrise. Finally I had a magical day where I had both. I crawled up to a ledge on the lake to not disturb the bird, and peeked over to get the shot I had been looking for. This bird was remarkably patient with the steady stream of birders and photographers that came by to visit. I really love the picture because of the colors behind the bird, and also because it was the first day that I saw a Song Sparrow this year and it reminds me of spring. It would be a really good picture… if it wasn’t for that DAMN STICK! Right in front of the bird! I mean it happens all the time that a little twig or something is distracting in the image… but why did it have to be this one! At this particular moment I had just turned away from a sunrise cresting over Lake Ontario because it was getting too bright, and in that orange light I saw this golden-green on the bird that seemed to match the color of its eye. For perspective, the tree its perched in is green, but it was totally bathed in the sunrise which made it glow orange. What a great moment and a stunning profile.</image:caption>

So I spent a few minutes practicing with really high ISO settings on my camera to see what was possible, when suddenly I saw this Palm Warbler very close to where I was standing. Although there are a few other Warblers to be seen before the Yellow arrives, it’s such a distinctive bird that it really does announce the start of the migration season for me. <image:caption>To close, you can’t talk about the Warbler migration without having a picture of a Yellow-rumped Warbler. For every Blackburnian in the trees, there’s about 10 Yellow-rumps (or “butter-butts” as I’ve heard them called). This particular bird is a very striking male, and he didn’t seem the least bit concerned that I was there. I took this photo at the end of my walk on a lovely Spring morning, and its the type of photo that makes me excited to go back out again the next day.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I debated giving this bird its own post entitled “My Favorite Bird”. The Blackburnian Warbler is an absolutely striking Warbler, with a black and white body and a blaze-orange head. It was one of the first birds I ever saw that actually to my breath away when I first saw it. This year a good friend suggested we go to a really good spot he found, which was really just a pond in the middle of a gigantic housing development. I can’t complain though, because we were fortunate enough to get lots of great looks at several Blackburnian Warblers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The technical term for this is a “butt shot”, but what I really wanted to capture was the red on the top of this Ruby-crowned Kinglet. These guys move so fast through the trees that they hardly ever pose long enough to get a good picture, and then when you do, its even harder to capture that beautiful “ruby crown” on the top of their heads.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Hi I’m Jack, will you come birding with me?</image:title>
<image:caption>In January of 2019 I was restless. Work, marriage, children, money, staying fit, keeping up with friends, and soon a global pandemic had me looking for ways to quiet the mind. I found Birding and quickly fell in love. Birds are a broad and rich subject matter, and tracking and identifying them throughout the world is an incredibly fun challenge. I love that you can participate anywhere, at any moment, with very little upfront investment. For extra fun add in travel, tracking a “Life List”, and learning about the over 9,000 species of birds with all of their unique traits and characteristics. It doesn’t take long for this hobby to turn into an obsession. I wanted to share my excitement for birding with others. ComeBirdingWithMe.com was created so I could document my journey of learning and capture some of those incredible moments in the field. It’s also a way for me to practice building a website, post a few pictures, and work on my creative writing. (send feedback!) - Jack Jack Reynolds lives outside of Boston with his wife Cornelia, 2 kids, and a dog. He is a marketing executive for a soap company, enjoys skiing and hiking, reading philosophy, aspires to own a small boat one day, and would really love you to come birding with him.</image:caption>
